The DAR is one of the largest volunteer women’s service organizations in the world. We are dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education. We were founded on October 11, 1890, and incorporated in 1896 by an act of Congress. More than 836,000 women have joined the DAR since it was founded. There are more than 3,000 chapters in the United States. There are chapters all over the world: Japan, France, Spain, Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Bermuda, and the United Kingdom. Please visit our national website: www.dar.org to read about steps to membership and to fill out a prospective membership form. Remember to specify William Capers as your chapter of choice. Our Captain William was a spy for General Francis Marion and went on to serve in the South Carolina Legislature. Our chapter was founded 102 years ago but none of us are that old! Being a DAR member offers many advantages in addition to the social aspect. Two of the most obvious ones are: (1) having your family history documented and preserved in hard copy & digital form so that it can be shared for generations to come and (2) having the privilege to present your daughter, grand-daughter, niece, cousin, or cousin’s daughter at the beautiful and prestigious Colonial Ball in Charleston at Christmas time. This is truly a dress-up family reunion to be enjoyed and remembered forever. Please consider joining our fun and fellowship this year as we honor our brave ancestors who were willing to give their lives so that we can enjoy freedom!
